How many times do I have to ask you???

How many times do I have to ask you???

Does this title bring a knowing smile? Or make you recall how many times those words have issued from your lips (or formed in your thoughts) over something someone left undone. Well, today, I had the chance to view that question in a whole new context.

I was honored to be included at a luncheon where Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY’s List*, was the special guest. (And if you don’t know EMILY’s List, check it out!) The subject was women and political office, and the mission of EMILY’s List to get more progressive women elected. Pretty straightforward goal, especially when over half our citizens are women, right? But the reality is strikingly different.

“Do you know how many times you usually have to ask a woman before she’ll run for political office?” shared Stephanie. “SEVEN! And how many times do you have to ask a man?” “Zero!” someone called. We all laughed but really, it’s true. If a man thinks he wants to run, he does. He doesn’t wait to be asked. And even if he did, it certainly wouldn’t take seven times!

You may never run for political office. I won’t. Although I’m proudly politically active, holding an office has never been on my radar. But the conversation today does have me wondering:

What AM I waiting to be asked to do?

And why on earth am I waiting?

How about you?

PS To those of you wondering who EMILY is, it’s not a ‘she’… it stands for “Early Money Is Like Yeast” (it makes the dough rise!)

  1. Kyle, I personally think you should run for office. I would vote for you. I know, Elizabeth Warren for president, and you can be her VP!

    • Renee, I’m flattered to be mentioned in the same SENTENCE with Elizabeth Warren! I admire her, too. Even backed her run for Senate in Mass. when I couldn’t vote for her!!!
